UV (Ultraviolet) Light Protection

An excellent pair of sunglasses should have 99 to 100% UV-A and UV-B blockage with wavelengths up to 400 nm (nanometres). Natural sunlight that reaches the surface of the earth contains UV-A and UV-B light. Natural UV-C light is blocked by the earth's atmosphere.

Excessive UV light exposure over many years is associated with an earlier onset of cataracts. It may also (along with short wavelength blue light) be an increased risk factor for the development of AMD (Age-related macular degeneration). In addition, sunglasses offer protection from the development of photokeratitis ("sunburn" of the cornea) and also protects the conjunctiva, eyelids, and surrounding tissues from harmful UV rays.

Sunglasses do not protect the eyes from potential permanent damage from looking directly at the sun and does not protect the eyes when looking at a solar eclipse.
