An Optometrist

Doctors of Optometry (optometrists) are independent primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of disease and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of ocular manifestations of systemic conditions. This includes the provision of eyeglasses, contact lenses, pharmaceutical prescriptions, vision training, and low vision services when appropriate. If necessary, referrals are made for consultation to the appropriate practitioner for further treatment of ocular and systemic diseases or for eye surgery. In British Columbia the majority of all primary vision care and eye health examinations are provided by over 500 optometrists in over 90 communities.
